#TurksandCaicos, July 5, 2022 – The much-anticipated delivery of the InterHealth Canada Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital’s new GE SIGNA™ 1.5T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine completed a successful transfer from overseas to its new home at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre on Wednesday, June 29, 2022.

Under a cloudless, beautiful sky and welcoming sunny weather, the GE SIGNA™ 1.5T MRI was skillfully and expertly lifted into the air using a massive crane onto a conveyor belt that allowed the unit with some manpower to glide into the MRI plant room. And Just like that, a new era of precision medicine is set to begin at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is committed to improving health care across the Turks and Caicos Islands on all levels explained The Minister of Health and Human Services Honourable Jamell Robinson

“Having access to technology like the GE SIGNA™ 1.5T is fantastic news. This MRI replacement project, in particular, will significantly and positively impact families in our communities that need access without unnecessary wait times. But as a growing Country, continued investments in health care are also critical for doing everything possible to ensure our residents receive the care they need close to home, resulting in better health outcomes overall. As the Minister of Health, I will continue to be committed to protecting and improving the quality and safety of health care services in the Turks and Caicos Islands. This MRI replacement project has been a long-time planning, and I am very much delighted to see that it is on Island and will be operational soon. Congratulations to the project team”, stated Hon. Robinson.

The GE SIGNA™ 1.5T MRI’s arrival marks a significant milestone in the Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital, and it demonstrates a commitment to excellence, and people-centred care, while developing more seamless and integrated health services for the Turks and Caicos Islands Community, explained the CEO of the Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital, Dr Denise Braithwaite-Tennant.

“I am absolutely delighted to see our brand-new GE SIGNA™ 1.5T MRI Scanner delivered to its new home at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre this week. This GE SIGNA™ 1.5T (MRI) is the first of its kind with artificial intelligence-enabled features in the Caribbean. The installation of a new MRI and CT scan is a capital project sponsored by the Turks and Caicos Islands Government and InterHealth Canada. Overall, the GE SIGNA™ 1.5T MRI Scanner is designed to increase efficiency, improve productivity, maximize our diagnostic potential, and keep the patient experience at the forefront.

GE has utilized their over forty years of experience in Magnetic Resonance innovation to develop a system with an ingeniously simple, environmentally friendly design and future-ready capability. This is excellent news for our patients and the diagnostic imaging team using the new equipment with its advanced technology. I want to say a huge thank you to our patients and colleagues for their patience during the project by accommodating the various changes in patient flow and our amazing and naturally excellent Project Team for their hard work on this historical and transformative project”, said CEO Dr Braithwaite-Tennant.

“The next stage of the project will run over the next four weeks and will be focused on restoring the infrastructure, installation of the unit and training for all categories of staff. The MRI shall complete onsite quality and safety checks before service implementation. Once these key pieces of the project plan are completed, it’s anticipated that MRI exams for patients will begin on schedule in early August. Our aim is to make each patient’s experience a more pleasant one,” stated Pheona Brown- Watson, Project Manager.

#TheBahamas, July 6, 2022 – Minister of Health & Wellness, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, officially commissioned the Orthopaedic Clinic and Wound Care Services areas at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) as part of a brief ceremony Monday July 4th, 2022. The newly relocated and upgraded service areas were officially handed over to the hospital by contractor Inline Construction Company and will resume clinical services providing care for the hospital’s outpatients.

The improvement works are part of the initial phase of the Urgent & Emergency Care Project, a joint initiative between the Ministry of Health & Wellness and the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) which broke ground in 2019. UECP’s objective is to enhance Urgent Care and Emergency Care services in New Providence and encompasses improvements works at PMH and public health clinics on the island.

Minister Darville officially cut the ribbon on the upgraded areas sharing, “The areas being blessed by PMH Chaplain Cannon, Rev Sebastian Campbell this afternoon, and commissioned to return to operative status includes a dedicated space for Orthopaedic Clinic Services outside of the main Emergency Department footprint, and a new home for Wound Care clinic services.”

The Minister provided context for the upgrades at PMH, listing them among several significant health infrastructure initiatives currently underway or forthcoming by the Ministry of Health & Wellness at PMH and clinics around New Providence. “At the Princess Margaret Hospital, the second phase, where some additional spaces are needed in order for us to improve the quality of healthcare delivery systems for our patients. That is expected to be completed at the end of the year.” Also referenced by the Minister were improvement works to the Elizabeth Estates Clinic, the South Beach Health Centre, and the Blue Hills Clinic.

PHA Managing Director, Mrs. Aubynette Rolle, spoke to the significance of the project and the importance of upgrading hospital infrastructure and services without disrupting normal operations. “The journey from ground-breaking on this project in 2019 to today’s blessing and commissioning has not been an easy one. Any major capital project in an institution as complex, as aged, as busy as the Princess Margaret Hospital is a very difficult undertaking. When we consider that any such undertaking must be accomplished with an absolute minimum of disruption to the hospital’s operations, services, patients, and staff, then what is a difficult undertaking becomes a herculean feat of planning, coordination, and creative problem-solving.”

She noted, “We are grateful to Inline Construction and TDG for all their efforts in collaborating with us to minimize disruptions to both the Emergency Department and the hospital over the course of the project thus far.”

#TurksandCaicos, July 6, 2022 – The Environmental Health Department, as part of its ongoing food safety awareness campaign, is providing safety tips to help consumers get a better understanding of food labeling dates, which give a guide to how long food can be kept before it begins to deteriorate or may become unsafe to eat.

All packaged food should be clearly labeled with the appropriate durability indication. “Best by,” “use by,” “sell by” and “expires on” are just some of the terms found on food packaging.  The department would like to inform consumers of what food date labels actually mean so that they can make safe choices and optimize the use and storage of their food.

“Best by,” “Best Before,” “Best if Used Before” or “Best if Used By”: These relate to food quality indicating when the product will have its best flavor or texture.  Surpassing this date food may still be safe to consume but the quality would not be good. An example is bread, past the date it may be okay to eat but may be dry and leathery.

“Use Before” or “Use By” and “Expired on”: These dates relate to safety. These are manufacture recommended dates that tell consumers when the product should no longer be consumed. Food can be eaten or frozen then storedbefore or on these dates but not after. These dates are usually found on perishable food such as meats, dairy and ready-to-eat meals which can be very unsafe to consume when passed its date.

“Freeze-By”: This is the date you should freeze a product for it to maintain its top quality and should not be thawed unless it is to be used. Thawing then refreezing a product changes its integrity and compromises its safety.

“Sell-By”: This label is directed toward the retailer to ensure proper turnover of inventory. This is the last date that the product should be displayed in the store.  The most important labels to understand and look for are the “best before” and “use by dates”.

The Environmental Health Department (EHD) is dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of our country.  The department is urging consumers to report any suspicious or outdated labelled food products that may be seen on display or if they have any general inquiries regarding food safety, to please contact the EHD at 338-2142.

July 6, 2022 – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), committed US$750,000 to support programmes of CARPHA over the next 18 months. PAHO and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) signed a subsidiary agreement to improve regional public health, including health security, at the Trinidad Hilton today, June 29th 2022.

Sub-regional Programme Director, PAHO Caribbean, Mr. Dean Chambliss stated, “These agreements not only provide structure to our alliance, but also symbolise the commitment we share to working together to advance public health in the Caribbean region, in support of our Member States and the Caribbean people”.

Mr. Chambliss was high in praise for the work of CARPHA and expressed his appreciation for the critical role the Agency plays in regional public health. He said, “Since it began operations in 2013, CARPHA has evolved into the public health leader it is today. Along with enhancing national capacities to deliver public health goods and services and providing laboratory support for disease surveillance to its member states, CARPHA coordinates responses to public health crises in  the Caribbean”.

CARPHA Executive Director, Dr. Joy St. John acknowledged and thanked PAHO for its continued support over the last 10 years of operations. She said, “CARPHA looks forward to the continued collaboration with PAHO; as one of its longstanding partners, both as a funding partner and a technical partner in the delivery of care to the citizens and visitors of CARICOM”.

Projects under the CARPHA PAHO workplan for the years 2022 – 2023, which will benefit from funding provided under this subsidiary agreement, include improving access to safe and affordable medicines, the implementation of policy for healthy food environments and strengthening capacities of countries for the surveillance of communicable and non- communicable diseases.

Dr. St. John explained that the CARPHA’s mandate to improve public health to the Region will continue to remain a priority as the Agency continues to align its activities to its strategic objectives and the overall vision of the Caribbean Cooperation in Health.
