BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Supreme Court has reversed a lower court decision that sided with a Houston-based energy company in a dispute involving oil and natural gas royalties.

The case stems from a lawsuit Newfield Exploration filed against the state after the Department of Trust Lands conducted an audit in 2016 that claimed the company was underpaying royalties to the agency that manages several state trust funds, including one that benefits public schools.

Barbara Ehrenreich, the muckraking author, activist and journalist who in such notable works as “Nickel and Dimed” and “Bait and Switch” challenged conventional thinking about class, religion and the very idea of an American dream, has died at age 81. A prolific author who regularly turned out books and newspaper and magazine articles, she was a longtime proponent of liberal causes from economic equality to abortion rights. For “Nickel and Dimed,” she worked in minimum wage jobs so she could learn firsthand the struggles of the working poor, whom she called “the major philanthropists of our society.”

The families of two military veterans from Alabama who are missing in Ukraine this week met virtually with federal government officials and Ukraine’s ambassador, Oksana Markarova, and participated in two Ukrainian-American events to observe that country’s Independence Day. Alex Drueke and Andy Huynh went missing after their unit came under heavy fire in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine near the Russian border on June 9.

A Florida man is facing charges that he left dead animals three times at a memorial for the 17 victims of the Parkland high school massacre. Authorities said Friday that 29-year-old Robert Mondragon left a dead duck, raccoon and opossum on bench that is part of the memorial garden outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was charged with defacing a monument, a felony. He was also charged with violating probation of a previous indecent exposure and assault conviction. His attorney, Andrew Coffey, said Mondragon had a difficult and traumatic childhood. He said Mondragon was the child victim in a criminal case that is pending. He declined to give further details.

Cases of food-borne illness linked to Wendy’s restaurants have spread, now sickening people across six states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Humane Society of the United States says it has removed the last group of beagles from a troubled breeding facility in Virginia. The facility in Cumberland planned to sell the dogs to animal testing labs. But it was cited by federal officials for violating the Animal Welfare Act. The Humane Society says it took away the remaining 312 dogs on Thursday. Nearly 4,000 were removed. They’re being taken to shelters and other rescue sites that are finding them homes. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals initially investigated the facility. PETA found dogs to be living in crowded and stressful conditions. A federal judge approved a plan to remove them in July. Envigo RMS owns the facility and plans to close it.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has made its debut and the cast is finally able to talk about the years-long effort. The Amazon Prime Video series, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings, introduces new characters and shows the origins of others. Actor Owain Arthur says it took three hours each day to put on his makeup and prosthetics, while actor Ismael Cruz Córdova felt a pride that she and the cast were at one point the only TV actors working during the pandemic. Markella Kavenagh hopes the series inspires kids to read more Tolkien.

A legislative audit of the Southwest light rail project shows the cost of Minnesota’s most expensive public works project has more than doubled over the past decade to $2.7 billion. The report released Friday by the nonpartisan Office of the Legislative Auditor says the rail line connecting downtown Minneapolis and Eden Prairie has been delayed by nine years and that 20% of the project remains unfunded. Auditors noted the regional planning agency building the line, the Metropolitan Council, has not indicated how the shortfall will be funded. Southwest is an extension of the Green Line and is more than 60% finished.

Residents in Ethiopia’s largest federal state, Oromia, say dozens of civilians were killed in an attack by an armed group on Monday, the latest mass violence along ethnic lines that challenges one of Africa's most populous countries. Two residents of the restive Wollega region’s Horo Guduru area said an armed group from the ethnic Amhara community, known as Fano, targeted ethnic Oromos indiscriminately. Representative of the Fano could not be reached, and a spokesman for Ethiopia's federal government hung up without answering questions. Ethiopia has experienced widespread ethnic rivalry and conflict since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018.

The Chicago Bears say President and CEO Ted Phillips will retire at the end of the season after nearly 40 years with the franchise. Phillips, an accountant by trade, joined the Bears as the team’s controller in 1983 and spent four years in that position before moving up the organization’s ladder. He became president in February 1999 and has had a hand since then in hiring four general managers, including Ryan Poles this year. Most recently, his focus has been on purchasing a 326-acre tract of land in suburban Arlington Heights, Illinois, where a new stadium and entertainment complex could be built.

An Associated Press analysis found many U.S. states barely use “red flag” laws that allow police to take guns away from people threatening to kill, a trend blamed on lack of awareness of the laws and a reluctance to enforce them even as gun deaths soar. The AP found the 19 states and the District of Columbia that have such laws used them 15,049 times since 2020, fewer than 10 per 100,000 adult residents. Experts called that woefully low and not nearly enough to make a dent in gun violence, considering the millions of firearms in circulation across the country.

No further details were immediately released.

A series featuring some of the best offensive stars in the WNBA has so far been defined by defense. Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson have played like the two best players in the league as the Seattle Storm and Las Vegas Aces split the first two games of their semifinal series. But the games have been decided by defense. The Storm were better in their 76-73 win in Game 1. The Aces were better in Game 2, pulling out a 78-73 victory. All of which has laid the groundwork for Sunday’s pivotal Game 3 with the series shifting back to Seattle.

Boston Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari has torn the ACL in his left knee. Such injuries typically involve a recovery process of up to a year, meaning it would be unlikely for the veteran to play this season. Gallinari tore the same ligament in 2013. The Celtics signed Gallinari to a two-year, $13 million contract in July. He averaged 11.7 points for Atlanta last season. The 34-year-old Gallinari was hurt while playing for Italy in a FIBA World Cup qualifier against Georgia this past weekend.

Russian energy giant Gazprom has raised the possibility of a prolonged halt of natural gas supply through a key pipeline to Germany, citing the need for urgent maintenance work. The state-run energy company said in a social media post on Friday that it had identified “malfunctions” of a key turbine along the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which carries natural gas from Western Russia to Germany. It said the pipeline will not work unless these are eliminated. Early on Wednesday, Gazprom completely halted the flow of gas through Nord Stream 1 in line with an earlier announcement, adding that the stoppage would last for three days.

Paige Bueckers intends to play basketball for Connecticut in the 2023-24 season after recovering from an ACL injury and surgery that's sidelined her this season. Speaking on campus Thursday for the first time since being hurt, Bueckers was adamant that she won't enter the 2023 WNBA Draft. The 21-year-old Bueckers had an injury-marred 2021-22 season. The Minnesota native returned for the NCAA tournament this spring and helped UConn to the title game, which it lost to No 1 South Carolina. In early August, Bueckers injured the same knee in a pickup game. The national player of the year as a freshman had surgery four days later.

We've seen Hillary Clinton stand by her husband after he had an affair with a White House intern. We've seen her endure 11 grueling hours of questioning about Benghazi. And we've seen her gracefully concede a presidential election to the former host of "The Apprentice."

Ana de Armas is baffled that her hotly anticipated film “Blonde” has a rare NC-17 rating, even though other films “are way more explicit” than Netflix’s forthcoming movie about Marilyn Monroe and her legacy.

A man was arrested in Argentina after pointing a gun at Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner as she greeted supporters outside her residence in Buenos Aires, a rare case of political violence that shocked the South American nation.

President Joe Biden is asking Congress to provide $13.7 billion in emergency dollars for Ukraine as U.S. aid to the war-torn country is running out.  The request comes as lawmakers are preparing to return to Washington. It is part of a larger $47.1 billion emergency spending package the White House is proposing to pay for the COVID-19 response, the ongoing monkeypox outbreak and help for recent natural disasters. Congress will have to extend current financing for federal agencies before it runs out on Sept. 30.  The money for Ukraine would be on top of $40 billion in aid that was approved earlier this year.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Stefanowski has released three years of federal tax returns showing he and his wife earned a total of $36.8 million. However, the businessman didn't provide a list of his consulting clients. Stefanowski, who is running in a rematch against Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont, emailed the 2019, 2020 and 2021 summary pages of the joint tax returns for him and his wife Amy to reporters late Thursday. His campaign called it the “most comprehensive personal tax return release" by a candidate for governor in recent memory. Lamont's campaign accused him of breaking his promise of transparency.

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is set to be buried in a ceremony falling short of a state funeral that will not be attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin or top international leaders. Saturday's relatively low-key funeral reflects the Kremlin’s uneasiness about the legacy of Gorbachev, who has been revered in the West for ending the Cold War but despised by many at home for the collapse of the Soviet Union and the ensuing economic meltdown that plunged millions into poverty. Putin privately laid flowers at Gorbachev’s coffin on Thursday due to what the Kremlin described as a busy schedule that would prevent the president to attend Saturday’s funeral.

The pandemic changed the way much of America works, and the latest disruption is known as “quiet quitting.”

This time there was no finish-line disappointment for Mads Pedersen in the Spanish Vuelta. The Danish rider finally triumphed in the Vuelta by taking the 13th stage after three consecutive second-place finishes earlier in the Grand Tour race. Pedersen was pipped at the end of the second, third and fourth stages but this time the 2019 world champion had enough to hold on to his first Vuelta victory. He made a late attack to beat Bryan Coquard and Pascal Ackermann. There were no changes at the top of the general classification as Remco Evenepoel and his challengers stayed safely in the peloton.
